After a violent episode with her abusive boyfriend, a young woman, ANNE, summons the courage to escape, moving to a small town. Unfortunately, Anne discovers that the house she now rents was once the site of a murderous event. Four people were killed in the farmhouse 65 years ago.
The house has another resident: PERCY, 32, the ghost of the murderer from 1965. Percy charms Anne—they’re both fans of literature—he an academic wannabe and she with the goal of teaching.
Anne’s former boyfriend, BRAX, shows up with a bouquet of flowers and an offer of reconciliation, Percy offers an alternative. He’ll protect Anne if she helps him with his problem. Obsessed with the number five, he’ll never have peace unless he kills a fifth victim. But, what he really wants is for Anne to help him NOT kill in the first place. It’s seems an impossible request. Percy explains that he saw Anne try to intervene in 1965. There’s an overlap of the spiritual planes coming on the anniversary of the killings and Percy knows that Anne can cross between the planes. He pleads: help me be the better version of myself.
Fearful that Percy will solve his own problem by killing Brax (a fifth victim), she agrees to help.
Things grow more dangerous as Brax becomes more emboldened. He steals her car and moves himself into the farmhouse. And, when Brax physically assaults Anne, Percy intervenes to stop the beating. Convinced of a truth she couldn’t see before (Brax is going to kill her) Anne agrees: Brax must die.
Brax is killed, though not by Percy’s hand, leaving him unsatisfied in his quest. Anne MUST be successful in stopping him in 1965.
The night of the anniversary arrives and Anne fights to intervene as the 1965 timeline weaves in and out of the 2025 timeline. She sees 1965 Percy with the first two victims, but, she’s unable to stop him.
As 1965 Percy moves upstairs to kill two more victims, Anne fights hard to break through. She wrestles with 1965 Percy for control of a shotgun, saving a little girl in the process. Still, by the end, Percy still manages to kill four people—his equation is unchanged. It was all as Percy had seen back when it happened the first time.
Back in 2025, Percy is distraught and determined. He’ll never have peace—unless he kills one more. Anne, perhaps? She begs him to let the obsession go—to choose to be the person he wants to be. He lets her go.
Anne, though, wants him to have peace. She returns with a solution: If Percy “kills” himself, he’ll be the fifth victim—satisfying his obsession. Percy sets fire to the farmhouse, knowing that once it burns down, his soul will be released.
Anne finishes with new confidence and full control of her own life. With new knowledge that she can see between the spiritual planes, she becomes a teacher—helping children both alive…and dead.
