Director's statement:
While writing The Check, I wanted to explore themes in queer identity that are not often explored in film, more specifically the quiet struggle of existing in a heteronormative society and living up to those expectations. Many people feel the need to hide who they are- the need to perform for the comfort of others.
With The Check, I wanted to show how it doesn't have to be this way. I hope to inspire the audience to live authentically and truthfully, rather than hiding behind lies. So often people are told to hide who they are- to fit in a world that shames them for standing out. Utilizing themes of tradition. performance, conformity, and self-liberation, the film explores how damaging it can be to live a life shaped by this fear and expectation. It is about breaking that cycle, and choosing honesty over pro-social deception.
My hope is that this story encourages audiences to live truthfully, to reject the pressure to shrink themselves, and to believe that freedom comes from being who you are- not who you’re told to be.
