Director's statement:
As a middle class student receiving a private education, I have come to notice the apparent differences among my peers’ outlook on life based on their family’s income. Though my school consists of students from economically diverse backgrounds and offers scholarships, some of which I currently receive, the struggles faced by less financially secure students often go overlooked. Simple necessities like access to WiFi or silent spaces to study are considered luxuries to those who don’t have them.
Intended to display the class differences apparent in the education system, The Scholarship Scam pokes fun at the frivolity of wealthy and out of touch teenagers from the perspective of their less privileged peers. Loosely inspired by my own life and the stories of those close to me, I have developed this tale of friendship, finances, and self reflection. I hope The Scholarship Scam resonates with all those who have had to work twice as hard to succeed in their education.
