Blumhouse Teams With MatPat to Adapt the Horror Game Amanda the Advent

By Kinolime Editorial Team // Verified Human Journalist Review

Summary

The YouTube creator will produce the live-action feature and develop more horror games and internet oddities for the company.
"Blumhouse is developing a live-action feature based on Amanda the Adventurer, the horror game developed by MANGLEDmaw Games and published by DreadXP, which first launched on PC in April 2023, with YouTube creator Matthew Patrick, known as MatPat, producing. The project was announced Friday at BlumFest during New York Comic Con.
A search for a writer and director is underway, according to Dread Central. Complex reported that the panel also revealed MatPat will develop horror games and internet oddities more broadly for Blumhouse, with Amanda the Adventurer as the first project under that partnership. No release date has been set."

"Hollywood used to option bestselling novels. Now it options indie games with cult followings and hires the YouTubers who explained them to millions of viewers. That's not a gimmick. MatPat spent years building an audience by decoding the lore of exactly these kinds of games, which means he knows what fans care about before a single page is written. Bringing him on as a producer is buying a built-in audience and a translator in one move. While MatPat serving as a guide for the moviegoer might sell tickets, it must also be considered that an audience who want content explained and analyzed for them may find themselves less receptive to a narrative than they would a video essay about the narrative.
The risk is the same one every game adaptation faces: what works when you're holding the controller doesn't automatically work when you're sitting in a theater. Amanda the Adventurer is built on the creepiness of interacting with a children's cartoon that knows too much, and the film has to find a cinematic version of that feeling instead of copying the game's mechanics. The writer and director they hire will decide whether this becomes a franchise or a footnote. "
