Busan's 31st Edition Brings 246 Official Selections

By Kinolime Editorial Team // Verified Human Journalist Review

Summary

The festival opens Tuesday, October 6, a day earlier than usual, after earning FIAPF A-list accreditation this year
The 31st Busan International Film Festival runs October 6 to 15 with 246 official selections from 59 countries, the largest lineup since 2019, The Korea Times reported. Counting all programs, the festival will screen 315 films on 31 screens across eight theaters, including the Busan Cinema Center, and it opens on a Tuesday, one day earlier than usual, StarNews reported from the festival's September 1 press conference. Busan received A-list accreditation from the International Federation of Film Producers Associations (FIAPF) earlier this year and was selected by the Academy as one of six festivals whose top award winners can qualify directly for the International Feature Film category. This year's edition spotlights animation, including a special Japanese animation program and industry forum, and expected guests include Michelle Yeoh, Maggie Gyllenhaal, Isabelle Huppert and Fan Bingbing.

Busan's new standing changes the fall map for anyone with Asian territory potential. A-list accreditation and a direct Oscar route mean a Busan premiere now carries weight well beyond Korea, and it lands in October, after Toronto's crowd has thinned. For a film with genuine regional relevance, being a headline title in Busan can do more than being one of hundreds in Toronto. The animation focus is worth noting too, since dedicated forums are where international co-production partners actually find each other.
