China's Box Office Slumps as John Wick Finally Opens 12 Years Late

Summary

The 2014 original took $2.3 million in third place as the mainland weekend fell to $18.2 million and the year ran 29% behind 2025.
"Lionsgate's John Wick opened third in mainland China over the Oct. 30 to Nov. 1 weekend with $2.3 million, 12 years after its global release, Variety reported, citing Artisan Gateway data. Regulators rejected the film in 2015, and Variety reported that it had been considered too violent for China; China Film Group handled the new release.
Resident Evil held No. 1 for a fourth straight weekend with RMB28.5 million ($4.3 million), lifting its mainland total to $71.3 million since its Oct. 5 Golden Week launch. Traces of Justice was second with $3.9 million and $98.5 million overall, and Once Upon a Time in the Middle East has reached $356.9 million in its 12th weekend.
The full weekend totaled $18.2 million, which Patrick Frater's newsletter called the fourth-lowest of 2026. Year-to-date grosses stand at $4.73 billion, down 29% from the same point in 2025."
