China and Korea Hit Fall Lows as Resident Evil Holds China's Top Spot
Summary
China's weekend market totaled $18.6 million, its fourth-lowest of the year, while Korea's $5.6 million frame was its third-lowest.
"Zach Cregger's Resident Evil led China's box office for a third straight weekend with $5.6 million, lifting its local total to $64.8 million since its Oct. 5 opening, Patrick Frater reported Tuesday in his Asia weekend roundup. The full Chinese market grossed just $18.6 million, the fourth-lowest weekend of 2026, and year-to-date ticket sales of about $4.7 billion are running roughly 30% behind 2025. Traces of Justice placed second with $4.7 million, for $92.5 million cumulative. Variety also reported Resident Evil's hold amid what it called a fall lull.
In South Korea, the weekend market fell to $5.6 million, the third-lowest of the year. Japanese anime Chiikawa The Movie: Secret of the Mermaid Island stayed first with $2.51 million and about 45% of the market, for $17.5 million cumulative. Yeon Sang-ho's Paradise Lost took $502,000 for third place and $770,000 over five days, while Clayface opened fourth with $595,000 over five days.
Frater noted the slowdown matched a wider global lull; North America's weekend was up 22% year over year but down 11.2% from the prior frame."
