Craig Zobel to Direct Something Is Killing the Children Adaptation

By Kinolime Editorial Team // Verified Human Journalist Review

Summary

The Compliance and The Hunt filmmaker takes on the BOOM! Studios horror comic about a monster hunter tracking child disappearances adults can't see.
Craig Zobel, director of Compliance and The Hunt, will direct Blumhouse's feature adaptation of Something Is Killing the Children, the BOOM! Studios horror comic created by James Tynion IV and Werther Dell'Edera. The news was announced Friday at Blumhouse's BlumFest panel at New York Comic Con.
The comic, launched in 2019, follows monster hunter Erica Slaughter as she investigates child disappearances that adults can't perceive or explain. Stephen Christy and Tynion produce for BOOM! Studios and Penguin Random House alongside Jason Blum, with Dell'Edera as co-producer. The adaptation was first announced at NYCC 2025, and Blumhouse is also developing an adult animated series based on the comic, with Tynion adapting. No screenwriter or release date has been named.
Zobel told the crowd the script contains ""firehoses of blood."" The series is nearing issue 50, and BOOM! has committed to at least 100 issues.

The Kinolime Lens
Zobel is an inspired choice because he's never made a straightforward monster movie. Compliance was horror built entirely out of people following orders, and The Hunt turned satire into a bloodbath. Something Is Killing the Children works because it's about the gap between what kids experience and what adults are willing to see, and that's the exact kind of uncomfortable, social nerve Zobel knows how to hit.
The deal structure is worth noticing too. BOOM! and Tynion stayed on as producers instead of just licensing the title and walking away. Creators who keep a seat at the table protect the thing that made the property worth buying in the first place. For anyone building original IP in comics, books or games, that's the model: sell the rights, but negotiate to stay in the room.
