Curry Barker Moves On From Obsession With Anything But Ghosts

By Kinolime Editorial Team // Verified Human Journalist Review

Summary

The 26-year-old's $750,000 horror film has passed $513 million worldwide, and his next feature has already wrapped for Focus Features and Blumhouse
Curry Barker's third feature, the horror comedy Anything But Ghosts, has wrapped shooting and will be released by Focus Features in partnership with Blumhouse, the Northeast Times reported, and Deadline describes it as a ghost hunters as hucksters title. Bloody Disgusting reported that Barker will also direct the next Texas Chainsaw Massacre film. Obsession, which Barker wrote and directed for a reported $750,000, has grossed more than $513 million worldwide and is being pushed for awards, according to Deadline. After opening May 15, it became the first film since E.T. to see its weekly grosses rise in each of its first three weeks in theaters, CBC News reported, and it is now streaming on Peacock. Barker, one half of the YouTube sketch comedy duo That's a Bad Idea, made his first feature, Milk & Serial, for $800 and released it on YouTube in August 2024.

The smartest thing about Barker's next move is the speed. He had a third feature in the can before the second one finished its theatrical run, which means he walked into every meeting this year with momentum rather than a pitch. The path from an $800 YouTube feature to a studio slate is not luck; it is volume, an audience built in public, and a willingness to keep making things at every budget level. For emerging filmmakers, the takeaway is to keep shooting. The best time to have your next project ready is before anyone asks for it.
