Avengers: Endgame Encore Retakes the Box Office Crown as Primetime
Summary
Marvel's seven-years-later re-release won the weekend with $26M, while four new and holdover films each topped $10 million domestic for the first time all year
Disney's Avengers: Endgame Encore topped the weekend box office with an estimated $26 million domestic from 3,060 theaters, the third-biggest re-release opening ever behind only 1997's Star Wars Special Edition and 2011's The Lion King 3D, according to Rotten Tomatoes' box office desk and Variety. The film, which added four new post-credits scenes teasing December's Avengers: Doomsday, pushed Endgame's worldwide total to $2.885 billion, second all-time behind Avatar. Resident Evil held second place, falling 61 percent to $23.3 million in its second weekend and crossing $100 million domestic at $103.4 million. Paramount's Brad Pitt survival thriller Heart of the Beast opened third with $20 million domestic on an A- CinemaScore and a $50.1 million worldwide start, ahead of A24's Primetime, which opened fourth with $19.2 million. DreamWorks' animated Forgotten Island debuted fifth with $12.8 million. It marked the first weekend of the year with five films each grossing over $10 million domestically.
The Kinolime Lens
A 61 percent second-weekend drop after a record-breaking opening is steep by the standard of well-reviewed films, but Resident Evil is still the story of the weekend by any measure that matters to distributors, crossing $100 million on a reboot nobody expected to clear its own franchise's lifetime total in three days. For everyone else, the real takeaway is that four different demographics, Marvel nostalgia, older action fans, Gen Z genre viewers and families, each had a reason to go to a theater on the same weekend, and all four showed up. That kind of demographic spread across new and legacy titles is closer to a healthy pre-streaming box office pattern than anything 2026 has produced so far.
