Gotham Screenplay Races Lean Global With Lee, Leigh and Hamaguchi
Summary
Three of five Original Screenplay nominees come from outside the U.S., while Adapted Screenplay pairs Hamaguchi and Zvyagintsev with Clarissa, The Invite and Primetime.
"The Gotham Awards' screenplay categories, announced October 27, put international writer-directors at the center of the race, according to The Film Stage and Filmmaker Magazine. Best Original Screenplay nominees are Everytime (Sandra Wollner), La Gradiva (Marine Atlan and Anne Brouillet), Possible Love (Lee Chang-dong and Oh Jung-mi), Tender Loving Care (Mike Leigh) and Wild Horse Nine (Martin McDonagh).
Best Adapted Screenplay nominees are All of a Sudden (Ryusuke Hamaguchi), Clarissa (Chuko Esiri), The Invite (Rashida Jones and Will McCormack), Minotaur (Simon Lyashenko and Andrey Zvyagintsev) and Primetime (Ajon Singh). TheWrap reported that films such as Possible Love and All of a Sudden were barred from Best Feature by the U.S. citizenship requirement for key creative roles but remained eligible in other categories.
Possible Love, Lee's first film in eight years and a Netflix production, is South Korea's submission for the international feature Oscar, according to Cineplay. The Gotham winners will be named November 30 in New York."
