Other Mommy Opens at No. 1 With $27.5M Despite a D+ CinemaScore

By Kinolime Editorial Team // Verified Human Journalist Review

Summary

Universal and Blumhouse-Atomic Monster's $19 million horror film led a hurricane-dampened weekend, while Neon's Palme d'Or winner Fjord posted the best per-screen average in the country.
"Other Mommy, Rob Savage's horror film starring Jessica Chastain, opened to $27.5 million from 3,365 theaters, according to studio estimates reported by the Associated Press and TheWrap. The Universal and Blumhouse-Atomic Monster release cost a reported $19 million and added $17.6 million from 50 overseas markets for a roughly $45 million global start, despite a D+ CinemaScore, the lowest audience grade since Megalopolis.
Verity fell 64% in its second weekend to $11.5 million and $53.8 million domestic, with Amazon MGM pointing to Hurricane Isaias, which kept audiences in the Southeast home Friday and Saturday. Resident Evil placed third with about $8.4 million ($138.5 million domestic) and Heart of the Beast fourth with $7.1 million.
Aaron Sorkin's The Social Reckoning opened fifth with $5.5 million from 2,606 theaters on a reported $30 million budget, with a B- CinemaScore and mixed reviews. The Social Network opened to $22.6 million in 2010. TheWrap pointed to trailers that never caught on social media and a story that felt both too soon and too late.
In limited release, Cristian Mungiu's Fjord, Neon's seventh consecutive Palme d'Or winner, opened to $124,000 on four screens in New York and Los Angeles, a $31,000 average. Alex Gibney's Musk took $68,900 from four locations and Chris Rock's Misty Green grossed $85,716 from six. The domestic year to date passed $8 billion on Friday, up more than 19% from last year, according to Rentrak."

"The weekend tells two stories, and both are about cost. Other Mommy got savaged by audiences and still made back its budget in three days, because a $19 million horror film with a recognizable star doesn't need to be loved to work. It just needs to be an event on a Friday night. The Social Reckoning had the better pedigree and the better reviews, and it got crushed. When The Social Network debuted in 2010, it rose to number one at the U.S. box office, earning roughly $23 million in its opening weekend. It went on to gross about $225 million worldwide against a $40 million production budget. Despite sharing so many qualities and cast involvements, the 'sequel' is failing. This illustrates the moving goalposts; prestige without urgency doesn't sell tickets anymore.
The real bright spot is at the bottom of the chart. Fjord did $31,000 a screen, Musk did over $17,000 with a four-hour runtime, and Misty Green held its own. Platform releases with real festival heat are still working when distributors are patient and the films are specific. The middle of the market is where movies go to die right now. The edges, cheap genre and serious art house, are where the money and the audiences actually are."
