Summary
The third installment of the Sicario franchise is moving forward with all three original leads attached. Sundance filmmaker Padraic McKinley will direct from a script by Steven Knight. Production is expected to begin early next year.
A third Sicario film is in active development, with Emily Blunt, Josh Brolin and Benicio del Toro all set to return to the franchise. Black Label Media and Thunder Road are producing the project together. Blunt had sat out the 2018 sequel, Sicario: Day of the Soldado, making her involvement here a notable reunion with her co-stars from the 2015 original.\n\nPadraic McKinley, whose directorial debut The Weight premiered at Sundance earlier this year, will helm the picture. Steven Knight, currently also writing the new James Bond film for director Denis Villeneuve, has penned the screenplay. Plot details have not been disclosed.\n\nThe first two Sicario films were written by Taylor Sheridan, who has since concentrated largely on his television work. Several writers have taken a pass at a third chapter over the years, including Christopher McQuarrie and Erik Jendresen, the duo behind the most recent Mission: Impossible entries.\n\nProducers on the project include Molly Smith, Trent Luckinbill and Thad Luckinbill from Black Label Media, alongside Basil Iwanyk and Erica Lee from Thunder Road, with Ed McDonnell also producing. Cameras are expected to roll in early 2026. The previous two films were distributed by Lionsgate, and the new installment is reportedly being shopped to distributors.
The Kinolime Lens
Interesting to see how long a franchise can stay alive creatively before it actually makes it back to the screen. Sicario 3 has apparently gone through multiple writers and several different iterations, which is a useful reminder that development is rarely a straight line. Blunt's return after omission from the first sequel is an important addition and is a win for Black Label Media and Thunder Road.
