La Bola Negra Wins TIFF's People's Choice Award

By Kinolime Editorial Team // Verified Human Journalist Review

Summary

Javier Calvo and Javier Ambrossi's Netflix drama beat out I Play Rocky and Being Heumann as the festival closed its 51st edition Sunday
La Bola Negra, the Spanish queer epic from Javier Calvo and Javier Ambrossi, won the People's Choice Award at the 51st Toronto International Film Festival on Sunday, with Peter Farrelly's I Play Rocky and Sian Heder's Being Heumann as first and second runner-up. The win extends TIFF's People's Choice Award's run as one of the industry's most reliable Oscar predictors: since 2012, all but one winner has gone on to a Best Picture nomination. It is a notable result for Netflix, which has never won Best Picture. Elsewhere at the closing-day ceremony, India's Angh, directed by Theja Rio, won the $20,000 CAD Platform Prize from a jury led by Pablo Trapero, making it the first film to use TIFF's new direct pathway to Best International Feature Film Oscar consideration. Simon Stone's Elsinore, starring Andrew Scott, won the International People's Choice Award, and Barry Avrich's Darlene Love: I Know Where I've Been won the Documentary People's Choice Award. The 2026 festival screened 294 films from 72 countries and drew nearly 7,000 TIFF: The Market delegates.

Angh's win matters more than a single festival prize. It is the first real-world test of the Academy's new rule letting winners at six festivals, Toronto's Platform Prize among them, qualify directly for International Feature without a national committee's approval. For filmmakers whose home country's Oscar submission process has historically favored safer, more commercial choices, a strong Platform premiere is now a genuine alternate route to the same category, not just festival exposure.
