Milcho Manchevski's Sister Brother Manhole Cover Wins Tokyo Grand Prix

Summary

The Macedonian crime drama took the $19,000 top prize from a Rolf de Heer-led jury as Lisandro Alonso won best director.
"Sister Brother Manhole Cover, directed by Milcho Manchevski, won the Tokyo Grand Prix at the 39th Tokyo International Film Festival on Wednesday, Deadline reported. The film follows siblings in post-Communist Macedonia who steal bronze busts and manhole covers until an injury pulls them into the criminal underworld. The prize carries JPY3 million (about $19,000). Coccinelle Film Sales handles international rights, Screen reported earlier this year.
The jury, led by Australian filmmaker Rolf de Heer, gave its Special Jury Prize to Sun Xun's animated Magic Atlas (Singapore), which blends ink wash painting with medieval European engravings and took a decade to make. Argentina's Lisandro Alonso won best director for Double Freedom, Hu Ling won best actress for The Night That Binds Us and Narita Ryo won best actor for Mishima Yukiko's Two Cigarettes, Three Nights. Jelena Maksimović's Until The Day Ends (Serbia) won for artistic contribution.
Teodora Ana Mihai's Heysel 85 took the audience award. In the Asian Future section, Tareq Daoud's Serife Tavsan (Afghanistan) won best film. The festival also introduced prizes for its Nippon Cinema Now strand, won by Tanaka Miki's Silver Express."
