Why Horror Keeps Winning at the Box Office
Summary
From The Blair Witch Project to this year's Obsession, the genre's math keeps favoring small budgets, strong concepts and unfamiliar faces.
"No Film School published an analysis Tuesday arguing that horror is the most consistently profitable genre in film, built on low budgets and broad audiences. The pattern runs through decades of examples. The Blair Witch Project was made for about $60,000 and grossed more than $248 million worldwide. Paranormal Activity was shot for about $15,000 and earned about $194 million worldwide, according to TheWrap. Get Out cost $4.5 million and grossed $255 million on its way to four Oscar nominations.
The trend continues in 2026. Curry Barker's Obsession was made for $750,000 and has grossed $286 million worldwide, the biggest hit in Focus Features' history, according to the Associated Press. Other Mommy, made for a reported $19 million, crossed $30 million domestically within four days despite poor audience scores, according to The Numbers.
The No Film School piece recommends practical effects revealed sparingly, minimal lighting, unknown actors that make audiences feel anyone can die, a tight three-act structure, heavy investment in sound design and testing scares with audiences during editing."
