1922. Alchemist adventurers JACK and SANWAR retrieve an artifact from a buried Egyptian library. Chased by the undead, they narrowly escape. LORD SAXON arrives, taking it and leaving them to die. Jack explains that Saxon requires the Tablet to locate the PHILOSOPHER’S STONE. At a coffee shop, they’re joined by NERO, whose mysterious employer requires their assistance. They travel with him to RHODES. They meet GRANDMASTER CASSAR of the Knights Hospitaller. He requires Jack’s Alchemy abilities. Cassar sends them to SMYRNA, a city in the midst of the Greco-Turkish war. Beneath decks, Jack examines strange symbols in a diary. He falls into a dream, returning to the front lines of WWI, followed by a vision of an ISLAND. The ship is attacked by PIRATES, led by the eye-patched BAKIR. Briefly losing the diary to SIYAH, a supernatural figure, they retrieve it and abandon ship. Washing up on DELFINI shore, they are immediately apprehended. Elsewhere, LIEUTENANT COLONEL SUYUN’s men have red eyes, like Siyah. Suyun holds alchemic tests in a dungeon. He learns their medical supplies were stolen by ‘Eleni.’ Jack and Sunwar are brought to CAPTAIN ELENI, a Greek woman who believes them to be British spies. She resolves to deliver them to the Greek army in Smyrna. Jack places a bet with Eleni which he wins, buying their freedom. Eleni trades the medical supplies for weapons with Scotsman TAGGART. En route to Smyrna, they are interrupted by the pursuit of Bakir in Nero’s ship. Trapped in a small island chain, Sanwar concocts makeshift bombs from saltwater and metal. Jack survives the blast. Leaving Eleni behind is Smyrna, they break into a castle. Jack learns that the MAP is on the island of Agiotopos. He suspects Cassar of foul play. They return to Eleni, requiring a ship. Jack recognizes Agiotopos as the island from his dream. They find a cave with inscriptions and demonic skeletal remains. Bakir and Siyah, both alive and regenerated, catch up with them – wanting to take the map for Suyun. Various mythological creatures appear and begin to slaughter indiscriminately. Sanwar, Eleni and Jack escape with the map, which points them to Syria. Eleni abandons the duo on an island, wanting the stone for selfish means. Jack dreams about his loss of faith in Britain’s war efforts. Suicidal, Sanwar, a stranger, saves his life. In the present, they signal down a passing ship – only to realize it’s Bakir’s. He returns them to Suyun in BODRUM. Bakir has a magic stone in his missing eye, which regenerates him. Suyun demands they return to Smyrna to find Eleni with the map and diary. He sends Jack into a cave to find Eleni. An ensuing fight sees Sanwar kill Bakir by shooting him through his magic eye. Eleni and Jack kill Suyun, and his Stone dissolves into the ocean. On a yacht, Saxon closes a deal with a TURKISH MINISTER, then joined by Taggart. Saxon announces he will hunt Jack down.
