In the final summer of teenagehood, Charlie, Freddie, Cassie and Nathan embark on a trip to climb Ben Nevis Mountain, all with big dreams of the future. One year later, Charlie finds himself working a dead end corporate job at his father’s company, Cassie has found a new persona as an online self help guru, Nathan still lives with his alcoholic father selling weed to get by and Freddie has passed away.
At Freddie’s funeral, Charlie mourns his boyfriend and detests that he hid their relationship from his parents, Emma and Tony. Blinded by grief, he decided to steal the urn of ashes and embark on a road trip with Cassie and Nathan to scatter the ashes at Ben Nevis. Emma and Tony soon discover that Charlie has stolen the ashes and set off after them. The chase is on.
After narrowly escaping Emma and Tony, Nathan’s car soon breaks down forcing him to seek help from mysterious drug kingpin, The Supplier. In exchange for his help, Nathan must drop off a mysterious package to a nearby safe house. On route, Charlie accidentally opens the package revealing a gun. After a close call with the police, they pull up next to a nearby lake. Nathan opens up about why he sells weed and then finally finds the courage to throw the gun into the lake and abandon his life of crime. Inspired, Charlie throws his work laptop in as well, abandoning a corporate career following his father’s footsteps.
Hot on their heels, Emma and Tony stop off at a pub where they dance and reminisce about their marriage. The next morning, they find a DVD which Cassie gave them at the funeral which shows footage of their Ben Nevis trip from last summer. This leads Emma to slowly realise that her son was in a gay relationship which makes her question everything she knew about Freddie as well as Charlie’s motives.
When they arrive at Ben Nevis, Emma and Tony intercept them at the summit. She confesses that there is much she didn’t know about her son and asks to join them while they scatter the ashes. Charlie gives the ashes back to Emma and they all scatter them together and share a bittersweet moment to remember Freddie.
Upon their return, Nathan confronts his alcoholic Dad and uses the cash from his drug dealing to check him into rehab. Cassie finds an old screenplay that she and Freddie wrote and decides to pause the grind of self help videos in pursuit of her old dream of making feature films. Charlie confronts his Dad in the office and tells him he’s quitting and will be pursuing a career as a chef. Emma finds a picture of Freddie and Charlie holding hands buried in the bottom of his drawer and puts it up on the wall, proud and accepting of her son.
Charlie, Nathan and Cassie say their goodbyes on the beach and go their separate ways into adulthood.
