Following the tragic death of their parents in a freak car accident, sisters Sophia (21) and Alice (13) are forced to live together until their aunt and the courts can help decide custody of Alice. Neither are happy with the situation and their bitter resentment towards an unfair life and circumstances drives an immediate wedge between them. An underlying hatred is born.
It’s summer and Alice has nothing to do but hang out with her cat and Sophia’s bird, which could cause an interesting dynamic. A young boy named Ben (10-year-old deceased Ben May) visits Alice and they become instant friends. Strange things start to happen in Sophia’s apartment, and nobody can explain them, especially the Superintendent who at first thinks it’s all made up. Unexplained freezing rooms, objects moving, sudden brushes on skin, bad odors and the nervousness of the pets all start to make Alice and Sophia very scared.
As Alice and Sophia try to get along and make sense of the strange happenings, their failure is making Ben and his deceased mother, Maggie May (30s) grow stronger. And they have a revenge factor playing out that runs very deep in Sophia and Alice’s past. The girls learn of the history of their apartment where Maggie suffered from anxiety, depression and other ailments, ultimately taking both their lives. They also learn that Ben is the illegitimate son of their father and Maggie was his patient. A dark secret that had been sealed for years.
Sophia calls their priest to intervene, but to no avail. With the help of an ex-boyfriend and ghost chasing dabbler, they try to capture events on film and slowly begin to work together to stop whatever is plaguing their small apartment. As events unfold and truths are revealed, battlelines are being drawn between Ben and his mother. Ben has become attached to his new stepsisters.
Sophia and Alice are forced to work together and admit their love as sisters in order to ultimately defeat the strong force that is working against them. The showdown with Ben and Maggie will be the ultimate test for love, life and sacrifice. Being their brother, Ben turns his rage against his mother and fights her to save Sophia and Alice. Other ghosts in the building who died at the hands of Maggie appear to help.
In the end, Sophia and Alice are able to finally put their parents’ souls to rest by visiting the gravesite and leaving the last mementos behind.
