Director's statement:
A curious chicken wanders into the heart of Los Angeles, embarking on a soulful odyssey through a dangerous and beautiful new world. Told entirely from the chicken’s perspective, this live-action short is funny and heartfelt, a real emotional journey seen through the eyes of a real chicken. Think The Red Balloon meets Plato’s Cave, scored by contemporary propulsive synth beats and filtered through dreamy, cinematic imagery. The story is for anyone who’s felt like an outsider and appreciates fast-paced storytelling paired with striking unconventional visuals.
Shot on location around L.A. and in a coop, the film captures two distinct worlds. Coop scenes are intimate and tactile, with low, dirty angles from the chicken’s vantage. In contrast, the chicken’s night out becomes slick, magical, and slightly surreal, pushing her emotional experience through city lights, macro close-ups on her chicken eye, and extreme angles.
From hiding in a sidewalk clothing rack to becoming an accidental mascot in a party, the chicken moves through moments of absurdity, danger, and wonder. In the climax, she’s lifted through a moonroof as music pulses and downtown lights stream past: an unlikely spiritual awakening. Then she’s left behind… and eventually returns to the coop. But she’s changed, and so are we.
Blending live-action, subtle effects, and partial puppetry, this cinematic short leans into the absurd question—why did the chicken cross the road?—to find something moving. Is it ridiculous to dream with a chicken? Maybe. But it’s also kind of beautiful.
