Ash Waters is a once-in-a-generation talent songwriter, singer and guitar player. Raised by her single father, Heath Waters, a struggling musician, she is introduced to the life of Rock N' Roll at a young age.
Ash is a social outcast as a teenager growing up on the streets of Los Angeles. She is quite reserved, contrary to her best friend, Lexi, who has a much more bold personality. Lexi is a talented drummer as well. Ash just wants to use her music as a creative outlet, a means to release her angst. She has a distaste for any type of fame or notoriety. After hearing Ash perform an original song, however, Lexi is adamant that they record it. They record a cover of an Amy Winehouse song after school at Ash's house in a bedroom studio with her older half- brother, Jett, who is a talented young producer. Jett is impressed with Ash's talent as well and encourages her to keep writing. Later, they all attend a concert together at the notorious Whisky-A-Go-Go along with Jett's friend Maddox, a talented keyboard player. Maddox is friends with the door guy, JP, who sneaks them in the back. Ash envisions a life as a musician, a life she has seen her father struggle at her entire life.
After the concert, Ash and Lexi's mischievous teenage escapade's land them in hot water and they are facing expulsion at school. Ash has a blow-up fight with her father, Heath, about dropping out of school and started a career as a musician. Their relationship is torn apart as Ash leaves home and forms a band with her friends.
Finally, after years of nothing happening, the band finally catches a break. Jp, the door guy from the Whisky, is their bass player and was able to get them a slot as an opener. They crush the gig and end up becoming a house band. This sets in motion a huge change of momentum as they gain cult following in the LA community before signing with a major label, Crossroads Records. Their manager, Sonny McCockren is one of the most notable names in the industry. Superstardom soon follows and Ash is designated by the media as the "voice of a generation."
Crippled by the pressures of fame, Ash starts a path self destruction before eventually landing herself in a coma. Lexi is concerned for her best friend's well being, but has her own demons she is battling as well. While all the focus is on Ash, Lexi ends up falling to her death from Ash's balcony in the Hollywood canyon.
Devastated by Lexi's death, Ash writes a song in her memory. only the record label changes it without her consent. The song is nominated for Best Record of the year at the Grammy's. Ash is disgusted. Instead of attending the award ceremony, Ash hijacks a limo at gunpoint and returns to the Whisky where she performs Lexi's song for an intimate crowd where it all began.
