With the exception of Grace Hart, students of Lexington Academy perform tunes at a fall concert. When she's suspended, her divorced parents, Adam and Emma, squabble over the cause of her mutism. The Harts have attempted to put their divorce behind them, each with younger lovers, Emma with hunky Owen, Adam with law school student Dennis. However, Emma’s depression over the divorce persists, while Adam, committed to Dennis, has difficulty expressing affection for him in public.
Logan, the Harts’ son, is unsure what to do with his life, although he has applied to the police academy. Although he accepts his father’s new relationship, many of Logan’s friends do not, causing him to resent his father.
The Harts bring Grace to a psychologist who closes in on the cause of her mutism, although she provides the therapist with no clue for her demeanor.
Adam’s parents, Frances and Nolan, arrive for the holiday, bringing Adam more drama and heartache. Nolan disapproves of Adam’s divorce and isn’t shy about his feelings.
When Grace gets in bed with Logan for comfort, Frances stumbles into the bedroom and is appalled, then barges in on Adam and Dennis in a private moment, causing an uncomfortable situation for all in the house.
As he spouts insensitive and inappropriate statements at breakfast, Nolan chides Adam over Grace’s mutism and the events of the previous night. Adam retreats to the living room where he has a one-sided conversation with Grace about Nolan’s verbally abusive nature, while Dennis confronts Nolan. Dennis implores him to maintain a relationship with his son because he does not have a relationship with his father. Dennis tells Nolan that his first love committed suicide when bullied after they came out. When Adam stands up to his father over his treatment of him, they reconcile.
On Thanksgiving Day, Emma and Adam make amends and the family seems to be whole again. However, police arrive to arrest Owen, who is wanted for multiple counts of indecent behavior with juveniles. Grace says her first words in front of her family when she confirms Owen’s guilt. Grace later confesses to Adam that she was mute because Owen threatened her and because she felt that her father failed to protect her in her time of need.
One year later, Adam and Dennis prepare to marry. Adam has summoned Dennis’ father, Robert, to try to reunite the men. However, Dennis rejects him, still unable to forgive his father for bullying his first love and encouraging him to commit suicide. Dennis dismisses his father, denying him attendance at the wedding.
Dennis and Adam stand before a wedding officiant with Logan, in dress blue uniform, serves as their best man, and Grace, now recovered from her mutism, sings “You Raise Me Up.”
