We open on an industrial oven, flickering on. As the oven, and our film, warm to life, we’re thrust into a series of quick cuts that showcase the expert culinary craft at hand. Onions are diced precisely, oil is doused liberally, bread is toasted perfectly. Just as we start to theorize as to what dish is being assembled, we cut to black.
Title Card: Amuse Bouche: A First Taste
We fade back in on the dining room of an upscale restaurant. The type you go to for a celebration, or to impress someone. But that’s all expressed through the sounds of the space. Otherwise, we don’t see anything outside of the high-end table cloth before us.
That is, until our Garlic Confit Mozzarella Bruschetta is presented onto the table.
We hear the reactions of those seated around it, but we always remain on the food, taking in its mouth-watering as the audio-only scene unfolds.
A young family excitedly tastes the appetizer. Specifically, a pair of parents and their young daughter. This is her first try at real food - food where they serve you in courses and design the menu, not just give it to you in a plastic covering or (Heaven forbid) via a QR code.
This is the young daughter’s Amuse Bouche. Her first taste. Of real cuisine, sure. But also, of life. Of what’s available to you when you go the extra mile, when you set a high bar and pursue beauty. Her eyes are opened, her taste buds awakened. This is a moment in her life she’ll never forget. She’s wow’d, and she wants more. From this meal, and her future. Her father promises that more is coming. And he’s certainly correct, for her and for us, because from there, we cut to black once again.
We start back over in the kitchen. Where we montage our way through another expertly crafted course - this time, a freshly finessed French Vinaigrette Salad.
Our pattern continues back out to the dining room, where our salad finds a young man celebrating his high school graduation. He’s onto the next step of life, much like the salad ushers him into the next step of his culinary evening. Despite his maturing, he has more to learn - as he finds out from his parents, also at the table. He crunches into the salad, and into his next step of life, and our film continues.
This is the rhythm of our short. A course passionately assembled in the kitchen, reflective of the life-chapter our diners find themselves in as they eat it. We follow the meal, and our life’s journey, all the way to the end, culminating on a reflective drink between an elderly couple, thankful for the ride they went on together. A bittersweet moment that helps us reflect on the life we’ve consumed thus far, reminding us to cherish every moment, and to be thankful each sunrise, for our daily bread.
