Turlough is an Irish doctor close to his retirement and feels underappreciated by his family and the locals. He is a proud speaker of the dying Irish language which the young folk around him don’t appreciate. He is called suddenly by Doctor Long, a physician in Sliabhcliffe looking for an Irish speaking general practitioner to temporarily take over his position while he is out recovering from surgery. Turlough agrees and moves in with his cousin who happens to live in the new small town. While first exploring town walking his cousin’s dog, he comes across a young man named Tadhg taking his anger on a car outside of his brother’s funeral. Troubled by this, Turlough calls him and his mother Róisín into his clinic to ask them questions. This ends up upsetting both Tadhg (for telling him what to do) and Róisín (for “gossiping about her family”). Turlough discusses the family with charming garda, Fionn, which worries Turlough that Tadhg could have been responsible for the death of another garda. While being visited by an old, overbearing patient Tommy, Turlough witnesses a surfer drowning and saved his life by pulling him out of the ocean. Turlough nurses Fionn after his accident and the two bond even more. Without fear of Fionn intervening, Tadhg is able to corner the mayor and steal back his car keys from him, which were taken away after Tadhg ran a cop off the road with his sick brother in the car. The mayor refuses to tell Fionn Tadhg was the one who attacked him in order to protect Tadhg. While in the city with Fionn, Turlough asks if he is out and the two openly discuss their sexuality and their experiences being in the closet, with Turlough even admitting he got married to avoid confronting it. Fionn and Turlough continue to bond and eventually admit interest in each other. When they return from the city, Róisín comes to the clinic and threatens to out Turlough to his wife. Fionn is upset by this news and decides to distance himself from Turlough to protect him. Turlough’s locum position ends, and since he doesn’t hear from Fionn, he chooses to return to his wife. On arrival, he learns his wife has been living with Tommy romantically while he was gone. Riona says she already knew the truth of his sexuality and they part amicably. Turlough returns to Sliabhcliffe to be with Fionn, their fate in the air.
