Three years after being rendered deaf in an explosion caused by her greedy, traitorous teammate MAK DORTON, ex-Galactic Marine Captain SENNA SAVINE still struggles with her hearing loss and her failed attempts to get back her military career. To keep busy she takes sign language lessons from precocious deaf teenager FAYETH in return for self-defense training. She also helps out at the diner owned by Fayeth’s father ELAR, who’s become smitten with her. But even their friendship and support are barely enough solace for Senna’s wounded soul. Then on the day she finally relents and agrees to let Elar take her out to dinner, fate intervenes. In a case of wrong place, wrong time, Elar and Fayeth are taken hostage by Mak and his ruthless band of mercenaries on the run.
After failing to stop Mak and his men from escaping the planet with Elar and Fayeth, Senna becomes determined to save them despite her shortcomings. She visits her old commanding officer, COMMANDANT FERNALL, and learns that Dorton and his team have stolen a secret new hyperspace power source and are trying to sell it to a mysterious buyer. Fernall gives her as much intel as he can and provides Senna some help, which turns out to be LIEUTENANT HELYNA DANZ, the young officer whose life Senna saved in the explosion. After an awkward reunion, Senna and Helyna head off to track down the mercenaries, while Elar uses his cooking skills to ingratiate himself to his captors and keep Fayeth and himself alive. This becomes more difficult when AZER, Mak’s pilot, starts taking a sinister interest in the feisty young woman. Fayeth figures out what Mak’s team has stolen and tries to convince her father to use it to their advantage, but Elar wants her to just play along and try to stay safe.
Senna and Helyna arrive on the pleasure planet CARILLON and find LARRICK, an old colleague of Senna and Mak’s. Their interrogation turns into a brutal fight with Larrick and his minions, but Senna and Helyna quickly become a lethal team, defeating Larrick’s goons and eventually figuring out Mak’s destination. Soon after, Mak and his team arrive on the industrial planet DUMA, where he’s supposed to meet his buyer, a powerful gangster named JAYPEC. But before the exchange goes through, Fayeth manages to steal the power source and escape with Elar into the bowels of a giant automated manufacturing facility. Mak, Jaypec and their respective mercenary teams track them down and threaten them, just as Larrick and his men show up to throw a wrench into the proceedings. But Senna and Helyna arrive in the nick of time, setting the stage for a massive showdown that tests all their limits and forces Senna to both confront the demons of her past and accept the potential of her future.
