The film follows the true story of Count Carlo De Rudio as he becomes involved in the Italian revolutionary movement and fights with Garibaldi against Austria and France. He flees to London where he falls in love and marries a beautiful British woman. He is part of a plot against Napoleon III and ends up sentenced to the guillotine but his wife, ELiza, get the sentence commuted to life on Devil's Island. He escapes, makes his way back to London and they immigrate to America during the Civil War where he joins the Union Army and becomes an officer of Colored Troops. After the war, he obtains a commission in the 7th Cavalry and ends up riding with Custer to the Little Bighorn and survives. Intertwined is the amazing love story of Carlo and Eliza and how they survive in a world of revolution and war.
