After a series of bombings the city of Daschev has been invaded by a foreign country. A group of soldiers from that country. have been tasked with occupying the city and ridding it off the insurgents who resist the occupation.
One of these soldiers, Sergeant James Radley, is in a transport, heading to the Hallen Crater, where he will lead a sqaud. As he travels he observes the ruins of the city around. In a voiceover, Alexis, a local guide for the soldiers, gives a monologue, wondering why his daughter was killed in the initial strikes.
James meets with the squad at the entrance to the tunnel system (located in a large bomb crater). He also meets two Daschev natives, Alexis and Yuri. Alexis has agreed to guide the squad through the tunnel system. After giving orders to the other solders present, James, his squad, and Alexis descend into the tunnels.
After some time traveling through the tunnels, the group reaches a series of rooms. James orders the group to split up. James goes with Alexis and another soldier go into another room, where they find the body of a dead girl. Alexis reveals the area they are in used to be a school that was destroyed during the initial strikes.
Just then, James gets radioed by the other soldiers, who believe they found a bomb. A second later, Alexis reveals he has the detonator for the bomb. James dives down just as Alexis detonates it Alexis and the other soldier are killed.
James rushes out of the room, encountering an insurgent who he quickly kills. Taking off his mask, James finds out the insurgent is Yuri.
One of the other soldiers, a young man named Luke, rushes to James in a panic, revealing the other soldiers are dead. James calms Luke down.
The two rush through the tunnels ending up at a dead end. James shoots at the ceiling, causing it collapse, creating a wall of rubble between themselves and the incoming insurgents, yet one of them fires a bullet that gets through the wall and fatally wounds Luke. James fires back before radioing for assistance.
In a flashback James is on patrol with Luke, another soldier, and Alexis. A boy runs up to the group and throws a rock, which hits Luke. Luke nearly shoots the boy before James stops him. A women emerges, and she and Alexis talk. Alexis tells James that the boy is an orphan whose parents were killed in one of the strikes. James decides to let the boy go with a warning.
Cutting back to the present, James sits on a cot in his tent, awaiting news about Luke. Nico enter the tent and indicates that Luke is dead. James breaks down into tears, wondering why he had to die.
