Director's statement:
I wrote this script as a way to process my own anxieties about choosing which school to go to. For myself and many other teens, this decision feels like the most significant decision I will ever make. This feeling paralyzed me into inaction, and it was in the inaction, driving to school listening to “On the Steps of the Palace” from “Into The Woods”, that I got the idea for this piece. That song is about Cinderella’s choice to leave her shoe on the palace steps so that the prince can make the decision of pursuing her or not and she doesn’t have to make her “first big decision”. Quinn, the main character of my screenplay, tries to do the same thing. They leave one show on each college campus, those actually being the same two schools I am deciding between at the time of writing, they are trying to relinquish the agency and responsibility of this choice to the colleges. Of course, this choice is brought back to them in the end because the message of the story is that you have to take responsibility and trust yourself to make the right decision. I wanted to focus on the themes of inaction and personal responsibility, and I am hoping that this script will resonate with other seniors in a similar situation as well as anyone struggling to make a major life decision.
